An Overview of Gun Classes to Attend at GRITR DFW Shooting Range

If you’re aiming to be a top-notch shooter within your discipline or just looking to be a responsible gun owner, finding the right place to practice is key. But let’s be real, shooting in your backyard isn’t going to cut it. You need expertly supervised, hands-on training at a shooting range.

In this post, our DFW gun range is here to give you a full rundown of all our gun classes. While we’re known for comprehensive defensive pistol and CQB rifle courses, we’ve got a lot more up our sleeve to meet the needs of all urban gun owners.

Texas LTC / CHL Class

As of 2021, most people over 21 are allowed to carry a handgun – both openly and concealed – without needing a Texas License to Carry (LTC). Additionally, certain individuals between the ages of 18-20 can also receive their LTC. However, under federal laws, GRITR and other licensed dealers cannot rent handguns or sell handgun ammunition to anyone under 21. So, if you’re under 21, you’ll need to bring your own gun and ammo to qualify for your LTC.

Back in the day, Texas issued Concealed Handgun Licenses (CHL) that permitted the concealed carry of handguns. But with legislative changes in 2017 that broadened the rights of gun owners to openly carry firearms, Texas made the switch from using the term CHL to LTC.

So, why might you want to get yourself a Texas License to Carry?

It’s about being able to legally carry a handgun in specific public places, such as schools and colleges, as well as in states that require a handgun license and have reciprocity agreements with Texas. Another, perhaps less obvious reason to take an LTC course is to demonstrate to yourself and those around you that you’re a responsible gun owner who is knowledgeable about their gun and can use it safely.

So, GRITR Range offers the Texas DPS-approved LTC Course. You can take it with your own firearm or one of our rental guns. The course includes 4-6 hours of classroom instruction followed by a written test and 1 hour of handgun qualifications at the range. The shooting exam requires 20 shots from 3 yards, 20 shots from 7 yards, and 10 shots from 15 yards. You need to pass both exams to complete the course – achieving at least an 80% on the written test and a 70% on the shooting exam.

It’s important to note that the Texas License to Carry isn’t designed to teach you how to shoot. You should already be proficient with your handgun before taking this course. If you’re not yet confident loading, unloading, and firing your handgun, you might want to consider taking our Beginner Pistol Course.

Beginner Rifle Class

Just like our Basic Pistol Course, this rifle class is all about laying down the fundamentals. Did you know that three-quarters of gun owners list protection as a key reason for having a firearm? That means the majority of folks coming in for gun training are potentially looking for something more than just marksmanship and safe handling – that’s how to defend themselves under pressure.

At GRITR, we’ve got a range of classes focused on self-defense and home protection to meet those needs.

Defensive Handgun Class

This class is designed to provide students with a practical approach to self-defense, teaching them how to prepare and effectively use a firearm in defensive situations. You’ll spend 2 solid hours on the range getting hands-on practice that’s all about real-world application.

Home Protection Class

Based on principles from the USCCA’s Developing a Personal and Home-Protection Plan, this course aims to arm you with the confidence needed to protect your home. Throughout this course, you’ll learn how to assess your home security and develop a personalized protection plan. The program spans both classroom learning and practical exercises in our Shoot House, making sure theory meets reality.

CQB Training Class

Inspired by the latest techniques from the US Army Special Forces Close Quarters Combat, this course is packed with the must-know skills for effective operation in a team or solo. By the end, you’ll grasp the basics of room clearing, home defense, and situational awareness and will potentially be able to respond to an active shooter.

Specialty Gun Training

Beginner Competitive Shooting Training

This course is a perfect entry point for those eager to jump into the competitive shooting scene. Designed with beginners in mind, we focus on USPSA and IDPA matches. Your instructors will walk you through the key safety concepts, procedures, rules, and gear needed for competition. You’ll also get hands-on with a live-fire session aimed at building your foundational skills for competing in a match. Plus, you’ll have the chance to run a mini stage, tying all you’ve learned together in a final showcase.

CCHDF Instructors Course

Take this course to become a certified instructor for the USCCA, allowing you to teach the Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals course. This course is well-known across the US for those wanting to get their concealed carry permit. As a certified instructor, you’ll receive top-notch training and access to exceptional classroom materials.

In two days, a USCCA Training Counselor will cover topics such as common instructor mistakes, teaching best practices, and managing a safe live fire range. Finishing this course means you’ll know the USCCA way of teaching and improve your skills as both an instructor and a speaker.
