If you’re residing in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and have already googled ‘shooting range near me,’ chances are you’ve come across GRITR shooting range. Unsure whether to come? Read on!
The Dallas / Fort Worth area is brimming with shooting ranges waiting for you to come train, compete, learn, or simply enjoy some fun-filled shooting. But what exactly are the factors you consider when looking for the ideal gun range?
For beginner gun owners, customer reviews are certainly a crucial factor because no one wants to have a bad experience. Other considerations might include the location of the range, the availability of gun safety training classes, and, of course, prices.
On the flip side, experienced gun owners may have more technical aspects to consider. For instance, max target length that dictates the skill you’ll be able to practice – handgun proficiency, CQB rifle maneuvering, or long-range marksmanship. Other factors could include ammo restrictions, the availability of advanced training, special events and competitions, and even the prevailing political climate.
So, if you’ve heard of GRITR but want to get to know us better or are simply looking for a good DFW shooting range, this post is for you. Let’s explore the strengths of GRITR Range.
A pistol & rifle shooting range
Yep, at the GRITR shooting range, you’re welcome to practice with pistols, revolvers, rifles, and pistol caliber carbines. A majority of people in our country own guns for personal or home defense. By allowing both handguns and rifles, we offer a safe place for you to practice your shooting skills, regardless of your defense weapon of choice.
Our range is equipped with high-density ballistic rubber backstops to prevent ricochets. However, as an indoor range, we do enforce ammo restrictions to ensure a safe environment – we allow handguns up to .50AE caliber and rifles up to .308 caliber (or any caliber with less than 3,000 fps muzzle velocity). During certain events, we even allow shotguns, but with slugs only.
A quick note for beginners: .50AE is one of the most powerful handgun calibers, famously associated with the formidable Desert Eagle pistols by Magnum Research. This means that you’re free to shoot any other high-power handgun caliber below this one, from .357 Magnum (a standard chambering for self-defense revolvers) and 10mm (popular high-power semi-auto pistol caliber) to .44 Mag and .454 Casul, which are popular hunting calibers. As for rifles, a .308 cal limit means we allow AR-15 rifles in 5.56/.223 and .300 BLK, most AR-10 rifles in .308, standard AR pistols, and 9mm carbines – all of which are popular long guns for home defense.
Designed for defense handgun training and practice
Located between Fort Worth and Dallas, in a developed area, we had no other choice but to operate as an indoor shooting range. It’s rare for indoor gun ranges to offer a maximum target length beyond 50 yards. We offer 25 yards, which is actually one of our strengths!
Some shooters might think of a 50-yard range as the best of both worlds. However, for us, it’s kind of an un-happy medium – too short for a rifle range and too long for a handgun range. Contrarily, a 25-yard range is perfect for urban and suburban gun owners wishing to practice defensive pistol shooting, as it covers the maximum engagement range for virtually all self-defense scenarios.
GRITR range takes pride in having 2 bays – one houses 11 static lanes with standard track motion capability, while the other has 11 dynamic lanes equipped with a 360-degree target rotation and pre-programmed run tracks. All 22 lanes are spacious and well-equipped for your convenience.
We allow FMJ rounds
We know that some shooting ranges ban FMJ rounds, which can seem ridiculous from a visitor’s point of view. FMJ (full metal jacket) is a type of handgun ammo specifically designed for target practice. Unlike hollow point rounds that mushroom on impact, FMJ rounds don’t expand and penetrate objects deeply (the potential for overpenetration is the primary reason why FMJ ammo isn’t suitable for your carry pistol). However, full metal jacketed ammo is easier to manufacture, which means it’s cheaper. And cheaper ammo translates to more range time.
Since GRITR is equipped with modern backstops that can handle FMJs (given the caliber restrictions), our shooting range does allow FMJ ammo as well as all other ammo designs, except steel core ammo, zinc rounds, magnetic rounds, and tracers.
A beginner-friendly shooting range
Our staff and RSOs are knowledgeable and emphatic people who can make beginner shooters feel at ease. But it doesn’t stop there. Being a beginner-friendly range also means we offer beginner gun training classes for pistol and rifle owners, where we teach basic firearm handling skills and gun safety. After hands-on supervised training, beginners transform into responsible and confident gun owners who understand how to maintain safety.
Experienced shooters are welcome too
Advanced shooters will also find a variety of pistol and rifle shooting classes at GRITR range designed to enhance their gun proficiency. In addition to the traditional Intermediate Pistol Course and Intermediate Rifle Course, we offer unique options such as an advanced pistol training class exclusively for women and an introductory competitive shooting class. Plus, we take pride in offering a special Night Vision Proficiency class.
Events and matches that foster a stronger gun community
If you take a moment to check out our GRITR range event calendar, you’ll find very few blank days. At least twice a month, we host USPSA and IDPA matches, along with personal protection seminars for women, active shooter response classes, and so much more. For certain events, we even assemble a group to train outside of our indoor shooting range.
Home protection training in our dedicated facility
In addition to the mentioned gun training courses, events, and matches, we offer something special – hands-on home protection and CQB training in our Shoot House.
The GRITR Shoot House is a separate facility within our indoor shooting range. It provides a custom-built environment designed for simulating various military and law enforcement room-clearing training scenarios. An important note is that our Shoot House is not a live fire range – for safety reasons, only realistic gun replicas and paint munitions are permitted.
Lots of rental guns to try before you buy
Another reason to visit GRITR range is our extensive collection of rental guns available at reasonable prices. We offer plenty of popular pistols and rifles from well-known manufacturers like Sig Sauer, Glock, S&W, Daniel Defense, CZ, FN, Taurus, Springfield Armory, Canik, HK, Beretta, and more for you to test them before making a purchase or to simply enjoy a fun day at the range with your loved ones.
We also have several options that are more of an exotic kind – Volquartsen Black Mamba .22LR competition pistol, Staccato 2011 pistols, IWI bullpup rifle, and more. Moreover, some of our rental guns come pre-installed with red dot sights, holographic sights, or scopes. This provides you with an additional opportunity to test out specific optics before purchasing them.
