The New Taurus GX2: The best entry-level CC pistol?

Taurus has done it again by introducing the GX2—a practical, budget-friendly 9mm pistol designed for concealed carry. The GX2 combines elements of its predecessors while addressing user feedback and maintaining an attractive price point.

An Evolution of Design

The GX2 is positioned as an upgrade to the now-aging G2c while also serving as a more budget-conscious option than the GX4 introduced in 2021.

Compared to the G2c, the GX2 is lighter, has a higher capacity (13+1 vs. 12+1), and features a more convenient rail system but retains a frame-mounted manual safety lever appreciated by many G2c users.

Also, the GX2 borrows ergonomics and design cues from the GX4 line, such as a VP9-style grip. However, unlike the GX4, the GX2 uses its own unique texture pattern for improved traction. The grip features memory pads, a high backstrap cut, and an undercut trigger guard.

One significant improvement from the GX4 is the addition of a toolless takedown lever (the GX4 requires a tool to be disassembled, which isn’t quite user-friendly). On the other hand, the GX2 trims down higher-end features, such as interchangeable backstraps and an optics-ready slide, to meet its affordable price point.

Dimensionally, the GX2 sits comfortably between the GX4XL and GX4 Carry, making it highly portable while remaining practical for real-world applications.

To put it simply:

  • GX2 vs. GX4: The GX2 is slightly larger and heavier, but the toolless takedown lever and a longer Pic rail make it more user-friendly and flexible. However, the GX4’s interchangeable backstraps provide more customization.
  • GX2 vs. G2C/G3C: The GX2 is a more refined product with updated ergonomics, better grip design, and additional features like the Pic rail.

Specs and Features at a Glance

Here’s what you can expect with the Taurus GX2:

  • Barrel Length: 3.38 inches
  • Overall Length: 6.19 inches
  • Height: 4.89 inches
  • Width: 1.18 inches
  • Weight (unloaded): 19 ounces
  • Magazine Capacity: 13+1 (optional 10+1 for restricted states, or 15+1 for higher capacity)
  • Rail: 3-slot Picatinny, compatible with subcompact lights and lasers
  • Trigger: Flat-faced with trigger safety, offering a clean 90-degree break and approx. 6-pound pull

The pistol uses Glock-compatible sights, with a simple dot front and drift-adjustable, serrated black rear for glare reduction.

Field Testing the GX2

To see how the GX2 handles real-world scenarios, Taurus invited writers to Gunsite Academy in Arizona for extensive testing. The GX2 performed reliably through drills that included accuracy, speed shooting, and home-defense exercises in a shoot house.

Its ergonomic grip and crisp trigger made it easy to handle, even for fast-paced dynamic exercises. However, some issues emerged under extreme conditions—when magazines were dropped repeatedly into the desert grit, occasional follower sticking was observed. Taurus promptly addressed the issue, and the problem is unlikely to affect regular use unless you train in harsh environments like Arizona’s sand dunes.

Affordability Without Compromise

With an MSRP of $309 (or $324 for the stainless-steel slide version), the GX2 is a competitively-priced option for budget-conscious buyers. Retail prices often dip below the sticker price, making this real-world EDC pistol an unbeatable value in its category.

Brett Vorhees, the President of Taurus, emphasized, “The GX2 is the culmination of all the process improvements we’ve done in engineering and quality control in Brazil. The result is that we can make a high-level striker-fired gun at the price point of the G2C.”

Best Applications and Final Thoughts

The Taurus GX2 has solidified itself as a serious contender in the entry-level handgun market. Its small size, good accuracy, and reliability make it a practical choice for personal and home defense. However, it also performs well in recreational shooting and training scenarios, thanks to its ergonomic improvements and ease of use.

While it lacks some features like optics compatibility, it delivers where it matters most—control, reliability, and affordability. If you’re searching for a practical handgun for around $300, the Taurus GX2 is undoubtedly worth a look.
